Your Step-by-Step Arrival Checklist
Before Departure
- ✓ Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
- ✓ German Visa / ZAV letter (coordinated via DAAD)
- ✓ Official IAESTE Acceptance Note
- ✓ Proof of mandatory Health Insurance
- ✓ Enough funds to cover a month living expenses (recommended)
- ✓ Check if possible to open bank account with IBAN through Revolut / online banks
First 48 Hours in Hamburg
- ✓ Meet with an IAESTE Hamburg member on your first day
- ✓ Check in to your accommodation and get local orientation
- ✓ Get a local SIM card (eSIM preferred, mainly relevant outside Schengen)
- ✓ Activate your Deutschlandticket or HVV transit pass
First Two Weeks
- ✓ First-day onboarding at your employer
- ✓ City registration (Anmeldung) and Tax ID (Steuer-ID) ONLY if staying longer than 3 months
- ✓ Open local bank account if needed
- ✓ Connect with the local incomer community and events

How do incomers find accommodation in Hamburg?
Hamburg has a competitive rental market. We actively assist incoming trainees with applications for rooms in Studierendenwerk student halls, verified student flatshares (WG-Gesucht), and short-term sublets. We also verify listings to protect you from rental scams!
What is the "Anmeldung" and when is it mandatory?
Under German law, every person moving to Germany for more than three months must register their residential address at the Kundenzentrum (Bürgeramt). If staying longer than 3 months, an IAESTE member will help you prepare the required landlord confirmation and accompany you to your appointment.
Do incomers need German language skills?
Most IAESTE placements in research and industry require English. However, picking up basic German phrases will greatly enhance your everyday experience in supermarkets, bakeries, and city transit.
What social activities does LC Hamburg organize for incomers?
We host regular Stammtisch evenings, Elbe beach gatherings, harbor ferry cruises, and city walking tours. You will also have the opportunity to join national weekend conferences across Germany.
