From initial registration to boarding your flight: here is how the process works with Local Committee Hamburg.
Register on the IAESTE Exchange Portal & Profile Verification
Create your free profile on iaeste.smartsimple.ie and select Germany - LC Hamburg as your local committee. In order to unlock internship opportunities and view current offers, your profile must be officially verified by LC Hamburg. Verification requires the following four documents:

- ✓ Official Transcript of Records
- ✓ Certificate of Enrollment

⚠️ Critical Notice: Profile Verification & English Language Requirement
Internship access remains strictly blocked without verification: You cannot view, select, or apply for open placements until your profile is verified with an accepted English test (minimum CEFR B2/C1, taken within the last 2 years).
Abitur & High School English are NOT accepted: German Abitur or secondary school English grades are strictly rejected by the DAAD and receiving countries. Additionally, simply studying in an English-taught degree program is insufficient without an official letter from the university certifying English as the sole language of instruction.
How to get your English test for IAESTE verification:
- DAAD Sprachgutachten (Fastest & cheapest local option in Hamburg: approx. 60 EUR): Offered via the University of Hamburg (Fachsprachenzentrum / Allgemeinsprachen: uni-hamburg.de/.../sprachgutachten-daad.html).
Fast-track verification shortcut: If you register for an upcoming DAAD exam and upload your registration confirmation to the portal, LC Hamburg can verify your account immediately so you don't miss application deadlines! - Duolingo English Test (DET) (~60 EUR / $59 USD): Officially accepted by the DAAD. Take it online from home anytime; certified results are available within 48 hours.
- Standard International Tests: TOEFL (iBT), IELTS Academic, or Cambridge English (maximum 2 years old).
- Exemption: Granted only if you completed high school in an English-speaking country or provide an official university letter certifying 100% English instruction.

Nomination by LC Hamburg
Our volunteer team in Hamburg handles the backend process of your application. If there are multiple people interested in one position, we will call for additional motivational letters or for interviews to make a final decision on who to nominate. Once nominated, you have an exclusive reservation of the placement for you.
Offer Acceptance & Binding Contract
The host company or institution reviews your application and makes a decision. They communicate through the IAESTE network. If your application is accepted, you will receive an official acceptance note on the platform containing all legally binding terms and additional information for the beginning of your internship (duration, start date, technical tasks, and guaranteed monthly stipend).
Pre-Departure, Visa & Arrival
With support from the receiving IAESTE committee and the DAAD, you obtain official visa clearance letters, enroll in low-cost DAAD group insurance, and connect with your local contact person before boarding your flight.

Everything You Need to Know Before Applying
How much will I earn during the internship?
Every single IAESTE internship is paid. Compensation is legally structured according to the real cost of living in the host country, covering your accommodation, food, and local transportation.
Can the placement be recognized as a mandatory university internship?
Yes. The technical qualifications and task descriptions regularly fulfill the mandatory internship requirements (Pflichtpraktikum) for University of Hamburg, HAW Hamburg, and other institutions. We provide detailed job descriptions in advance for your examination board.
Are travel grants or scholarships available?
Yes. As an IAESTE trainee, you can apply for travel subsidies through the DAAD. Placements within Europe may also qualify for Erasmus+ funding, and Hamburg universities offer PROMOS travel scholarships.
What fees are involved for students?
Registration in the portal, document reviews, and local mentoring by IAESTE Hamburg are completely free. Only upon final, binding acceptance of an internship offer does a small administrative fee apply to the national office (DAAD).
When is the best time to apply?
The main annual offer cycle opens in January and February right after the international exchange conference. In addition, continuous offers are published year-round with flexible start dates.
